Job Description


Located in the Yarra Valley 60 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD, Worawa Aboriginal College is a boarding school catering specifically for Aboriginal girls in secondary years of schooling Years 7-12). Established in 1983, Worawa is an Aboriginal initiative, the College is owned and governed by Aboriginal people. The Worawa vision and philosophical statement is “Sending young Aboriginal women out into the world with confidence in who they are, where they want to be and what they can contribute to their communities and to the wider world.’ The diversity of Aboriginal Australia is reflected in the student population drawn from urban, regional and remote Aboriginal communities across the country. Worawa Aboriginal College provides a holistic education based on an integrated Education, Culture, and Wellbeing model. 


Reporting to the Executive Director (Principal), the HR Manager leads the Human Resources Strategy and function, providing expert HR advice and supports the College Operation through building capability and a positive work culture. 


The successful candidate will be responsible for;



  • Leading the Human Resources function including development and implementation of strategies and initiatives, reviewing policies and processes, providing Executive coaching and reporting

  • Managing Performance by providing advice to managers, managing grievances, complaints and conduct

  • End to end recruitment and onboarding 

  • Providing industrial relations and remuneration advice

  • Planning and coordinating the annual Professional Development calendar for employees and manage compliance and regulatory training.

  • OHS for the College Community, with a focus on staff wellbeing


The successful candidate must have:



  • A minimum Bachelor level qualification in Human Resources Management/Psychology or equivalent

  • Extensive experience in human resource management across a breadth of human resource operational domains and demonstrated leadership experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the diversity of Aboriginal society and an ability to communicate sensitively with Indigenous Australians

  • A proven capacity to lead, develop and inspire staff and encourage a culture of innovation, professionalism and collaboration

  • Ability to translate strategic directions into operational outcomes with a proven ability to think and plan strategically, form and carry out action plans and evaluate outcomes

  • Excellent organisational and planning skills 

  • Highly developed written communication and interpersonal skills

  • Works collaboratively to achieve outcomes 

  • Ability to work in a co-led model with Aboriginal people demonstrating an ability to develop functional working relationships with the breadth of staff at Worawa and external providers

  • Ability to maintain solidarity and confidentiality with the Executive team 

  • Self-motivated, conscientious, reliable and enthusiastic, a desire to be actively engaged in the life of the School

  • Current Working with Children Check and Police Check
