The opportunity

We are looking for an enthusiastic and effective team leader and educator to teach Jewish Studies and Hebrew at an introductory stage for a small group of grade 3/4s, or at the next level for grade 5/6s.

Our ‘Sh’ma’ program runs on Monday evenings during school terms from 4.45pm to 6.30pm with a short break for the students between sessions. Classes can also be run remotely in the event of an extended lockdown.

The session is split between basic Jewish Studies (guided by a tailored curriculum) and Hebrew, where the emphasis for the younger group is on learning the letters and vowels and on acquisition of basic vocabulary, through the use of songs, games etc. For the older group the curriculum focusses on developing reading and some basic grammar skills and is partly book-guided work.

In addition to the Monday classes, assistance is also required to run about eight ‘Chagim’ sessions per year, usually on Sundays or around the Festivals.

Team leader responsibilities include:

  • working alongside the Rabbi to ensure smooth operation of the Sh’ma Program,

  • ensuring the building is unlocked before and secure after sessions,

  • supporting and assisting other educators/assistants,

  • running Chagim (festivals) activities approximately 8 times per year.

Skills, knowledge and Experience

  • A good understanding of progressive Judaism,

  • Experience as a teacher or youth educator in Hebrew or Jewish history and culture,

  • Experience in developing creative and interactive activities for children and young people,

  • Experience in supporting and leading other educators,

  • A professional Working with Children check is required for this position.
