Have you heard of the Federal Government's Skills Checkpoint for Older Workers Program? This is a $17.4 million programme available now until 31 December 2020 to assist Australians aged 45 to 70 helping them to stay or get into the workforce with the targeted support that they need. The subsidy is worth up to $2,200.

Eligibility:

  • Age 45 to 70
  • An Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Employed and at risk of entering the income support system
  • Recently unemployed (within 3 months)
  • Not registered for assistance through an Australian Government employment services program.

Availability:

All states.

More about the subsidy:

This will fund all training (accredited or non-accredited). The government contribution must be matched by either the participant or their employer. To be eligible individuals must have completed a Skill Checkpoint assessment that identifies training linked to their current job (e.g.) upgrading skills), a future job opportunity or an industry, occupation or skill in demand.

Examples:

A 55 year-old unemployed person applies for a job as a security officer but does not have a security license. The prospective employer or the applicant can participate in training to obtain this licence and begin work.

A 42-year old is working as a labourer for a furniture removalist company. His employer needs to advertise to replace him with a driver-removalist. The existing labourer will be able to obtain a truck license and keep his job.

An unemployed woman aged 60 wants to work as a medical receptionist but needs help to pay for the course. Her computer-literate skills are up to date, she is highly presentable but needs the specialist course and the money to pay for it to be able to apply for jobs in this field. This subsidy will put her in a position to be able to work in this field.
